Dave Clarke’s mid-90’s iconic Red Series now available digitally

Originally released in 1994 and subsequently formed a cohesive trilogy of releases whose electro and unrelenting techno caused excitement and anticipation; Red 1 is a monument in Dave Clarke’s discography and its release digitally for the first time ever is a crucial step in recognising his seismic influence on a scene that followed.
Now released via Skint Records, Red’s 1’s “Protective Custody” and “Zeno Xero” unseals a classic archive that propelled Dave Clarke’s career and journey through the international dance scene.

A pinnacle of Dave Clarke’s subversive artistry, Red 1 is one of his many motifs that transcended as a creative blueprint for countless electronic producers and DJ’s looking to pave their own path. Defined by its darker and more abrasive sonic pace and visceral accents the two-track mid 90’s classic is a landmark of techno and a body of work that forged a timeless pillar of the genre.

As a prominent figure in techno and bold ambassador for the genre’s inherent futurism, Dave Clarke has long been classified as a genuine, expressive artist whose lasting musical career combines a bold idiosyncratic passion and technical ability, crashing through walls of hesitancy with every Roland kick drum.

A maverick, a musician and a man with a singular electronic vision, Dave Clarke has great instincts – and those singular instincts have kept him on the correct musical path for over three decades straight. Having made music of his own since 1990 –  along the way he has collaborated with and remixed everyone from Depeche Mode, The Chemical Brothers, Underworld and New Order to Fontaines D.C. Soft Moon and Placebo.

By disposing of the status quo virtues that music must be polished and prepared, Dave Clarke’s early recordings, now approaching their thirty-year milestone helped crack open a world for fresh voices of electronic music and lasting reverence amongst the scene’s new generation of protagonists.

Dave Clarke – “Red 1” is out now via Skint / BMG.

Mark Reeve Releases New Album ‘Raw Mind’ on SubVision

Mark Reeveis a familiar name to anyone truly serious about techno. With a career spanning nearly two decades and championed by techno heavyweights like Adam Beyer and Sven Väth, Mark’s groundbreaking productions can be found on Drumcode, Cocoon, Bedrock. Truesoul, Terminal M, Soma, Second State, ELEVATE, Intec, Bek Audio and of course his own label, SubVision.
Mark is an artist that wears his heart on his sleeve. You can feel rawness and emotion in his music, attributes fully harnessed in his new LP. ‘Raw Mind’isforged in a spirit of the techno underground taking back some control. ‘Raw Mind’ sates an appetite for techno purists searching out vibrant techno with its roots in dark cavernous clubs with pummelling sound systems and bass that hits you hard in the chest, shaking the foundations you stand on.
Released on his mighty SubVision, ‘Raw Mind’ captures where Mark is a producer, artist, DJ and label owner. As always, Mark’s projects are delivered with passion and integrity. The result of many hours in the studio getting the right sounds, making little sonic adjustments to ensure the final results deliver where it matters the most -pumped out of the speakers and onto the dance-floor to give the crowd something truly special to get lost in.
Opener ‘Asia Worlds’ hits a dubbed out early night vibe -the sort of track seasoned DJs play as the club is filling, setting the mood and creating the right vibe in a venue. Melodic, chiming, echoey and with a slight edge -Asia Worlds gives a sense of anticipation for what is to follow.
‘Decisions’ kicks things up a few degrees with Mark summoning his Detroit influences. A hip motor city house groove is fused with modern techno aesthetics as lush chords and beats create a gentle swaying hypnotic flow. Subtle intermittent stuttered kicks add just enough tension to give the crowd an unexpected nudge. ‘Anticipation’ is pure underground Berlin and captures the real mood of a scene.
‘Anticipation’ is the soundtrack to a lost weekend at techno temples like Berghain and Tresor -crashing discordant chaos and shuffled industrial percussives meet classy composition and arrangement, yet with a freedom in structure that’s independent of time constraints.
For ‘Run Down’ Mark teams up with Swedish techno sensation and legend Samuel L Session. Two techno minds creating an uncompromising punchy focused techno gem that is upbeat and aimed at maintaining energy in the room. As the title alludes to, ’Don’t Stop’ is a thumping 4/4 beast, with its relentless and ruthless attack tempered slightly by the cool retro Chicago house MC sample.
Title track ’Raw Mind’ continues the onslaught and encapsulates what Mark is all about. Driving pounding kinetic uncompromising techno. The classy breakdown shows a true understanding of how to work a dark room. The beats are removed so the melody can get inside your mind, ensuring a sense of elation when they kick back in. Techno from the heart filled with genuine passion.
‘Concentrate’ sees Mark call upon regular partner in crime KLØSET. This is minimalistic stripped back thumping techno with serious emphasis on its tense sound architecture. So intense that a hypnotic dystopian voice brings warmth. ‘Shadow’ hits that part of a set where the night is in full swing, the crowd lost in its journey, demanding the DJ inspires them. Crisp beats and hissing cymbals set a platform for Mark to add more off-kilter elements into its freeform structure.
With LP in full flow ‘Burning Up’ maintains the momentum and is techno perfect for any sort of night. The narrative is aimed totally at the dance-floor, and lets the crowd know that they are there to enjoy themselves. Alway passionate about embracing new talent, ‘Future’ introduces NaDeenfor in intense pared back ride brimming with energy and excitement.
‘Madness’ was the first in the raw series on SubVision, seeing Mark work alongside new talent KLØSET. Here Mark delivers a special Raw Editwhich amps up all the key elements of the original while still maintaining the edginess people loved earlier this year.
‘Refraction’ is text book Mark Reeve with its relentless driving intensity, swirling resonating arps and throbbing bass. In contrast ‘Prism’ sees Mark stretch out, flexing his production muscles to deliver rich layers, deep lush synths and and sumptuous pads. A true techno artisan at work.
All of this lulls you into a false sense of security as ‘Obliterate’ lives up to its title -a techno juggernaut sweeping everything out of the way, but with a groove and low rumble perfect for the early hours.
The LP closes out on style as ‘Romantic Place’ shows another string to Mark’s bow. Here he creates a hauntingly beautiful and imaginative piece of electronica. The ringing piano keys go straight for the heart, as Mark provides a soundtrack to score the perfect sunrise or most scenic of winter mornings. A stunning way to end.
In summary, ‘Raw Mind’ captures a techno artist at the top of their game. Someone that is passionate and protective of the underground scene and a spirit dating all the way back to those early days in Germany, Detroit and clusters across Europe. Yet someone that embraces and supports new talent in the sense of community.Long may that continue.

Henry Saiz announced for Balance 032 compilation + releases single ‘Kickboxer’

Created over the span of two years, Balance 032 marks a creative high point in the career of Madrid-based artist Henry Saiz, and this marks his third appearance for the hallowed compilation series. Spread over an expansive three discs, it has given him the space to curate a truly stunning odyssey of creative expression, one influenced by everything from AI to his recent ADHD diagnosis.

As ever, he has gone above and beyond to ensure that the mix is crammed full of exclusive, unreleased material, with nearly 75% of the music included, both from himself, and many of his favourite producers and collaborators, from unknowns through to household names like Röyksopp. “Since I’ve done two Balance compilations already, I didn’t want to repeat myself” he says. “My first, ‘Balance 19’, was very important for my career and I knew people would be comparing it with this new one, so I put a lot of effort into it to make it more attractive and to be able to gain more control in the final product sound-wise.” – Henry Saiz Created in Ableton, which he uses for his DJ sets due to its unlimited creative functionality and precision (“I get bored easily with CDJs”), the mix makes great use of many effects, layerings, and production techniques to enhance the beautiful sounds that lie within.

Part 1 takes a freestyle approach to find a sweet spot between home listening and club warm-up vibes, all woven together through a narrative about the connection between the past, the future, the reinterpretation of old concepts, and AI. “I used a lot of AI techniques to add creativity to the songs, from cloning vocals to generate atmospheres, to creating grooves using text-to-music always like a tool in order to add to, and not to replace human creativity. Ideally, we will work with AI as a co-pilot also in the studio to make boring technical process faster and focus more on what really matters: ideas to bring our human experience into the music form.” – Henry Saiz

Packed with symbols and messages, its changing tempos span the creepy vaporwave intro of Hal Incandenza’s ‘I Know What You Are’ – setting the tone perfectly with an AI voice telling a human “I know what you are, I know where you come from\\\” – through to chugging electronica, dubby grooves, Indian rhythm, Balearic spoken word, sparkly breakbeats and teases of the clubbier sounds that await in the next disc. The euphoric climax of Saiz’s rework of Swedish duo Genius of Time’s recent release ‘Sunswell’ is the perfect bridge into the next mix, a whirling firework of pretty melody and spine-tingling arpeggiation. The breadth and surprises of this first disc would have made it a standout piece of work on its own, but of course that’s never enough for Saiz.

Part 2 leans towards the sounds of Henry Saiz in club mode, beginning with the warm blanket of sumptuous Milio’s ‘Dew’, building gradually and flitting between the deep and the soaring. From lush progressive house to the heavenly breaks of Brassica’s epic ‘Celestial Suspension’ through some truly staggering new psychedelically tinged material from Saiz, it’s a mix packed with magical melody. The disc crescendos with the shimmering riffs of Henry Saiz & Imalgi’s ‘Kickboxer’ (released as a single on 13th October to mark the Balance 032 announcement), where synths are made to weep digital tears, and the stunning liquid breaks and heartfelt vocals of Moonlight Wolves ‘All I Need (Third Son Remix)’. As ever, all is not what it seems in his sets, with heavy editing making these truly unique versions. “People try to Shazam my sets and usually don’t get the ID because of all the heavy editing I do while I play. Lately I learned this hyperactivity and need for challenging projects that motivates me comes from my ADHD. So, I guess the DNA of my sets would be coherent eclecticism but also a melodic journey that changes and evolves straight to a climax.” – Henry Saiz

The final chapter of this sprawling compilation explores the increasing tempos of the current era, expanding Saiz’s DNA into new territory while maintaining all the classy elements of his sound.

“The current vogue for faster tempos may be due to the constant stimulation we get from technology and how we process information nowadays. My DJ style has become faster because the world is going faster. My DJ sets are now moving through 110 to 140 bpm territories. I didn’t enjoy much music with faster BPMs a few years ago because it felt very overwhelming and had too many elements, but now people are producing music that works great at faster speeds because they have less elements and a groove that works that way. As long as the track takes you somewhere and makes you feel something through melody, that’s what counts for me.” – Henry Saiz A deep and spacey feel early on with plenty of dubby touches gives way to meatier sounds, psychedelic tones woven into the heavier rhythms as the tempos gradually creep upwards and elements of trance abound through a flurry of Saiz exclusives. A grandstand finish is guaranteed by way of his incredible chugging-based rework of Moonlight Wolves’ ‘Mantra’, the light dreamy beauty of Henry Saiz & Somfay’s ‘To Steal a Star from The Night’ and the intense synth overload of H. Haze’s ‘La Fuerza’. A perfect end to a truly remarkable body of work.
